A funny thing occurred to me this morning: there were twelve of us that attended the DARE wedding photography workshop led by Gary Lashmar (aka Marshal Gray Photography). Twelve…an interesting number. Twelve disciples shown the way and sent out to spread the word. Well, I can tell you that I for one have seen the light, and the glorious thing about that is that once you’ve seen it, you can’t not see it. Once you’ve seen the way to beauty and joy it’s just simply everywhere around you. Now I’m not saying life is suddenly all sunshine and roses, but even when your day is crap and things start to weigh you down, the way you look at the world around you is a choice. And what a photographer puts into a photo is exactly what they get back out.
On the second day of the workshop we got to spend some time inside the studio (natural light) shooting a pre-wedding shoot with a real couple. I had never met these people, I think I remembered to introduce myself, and I had 5 minutes on a timer to get what could be got. Now, without arrogance, this is easy for me: a beautiful couple in beautiful light – I can do that in my sleep. And yet…somehow Gary’s message was there: frame every photo inside the light. Look and SEE. I don’t know how he did it in less than 2 days, but somehow my photography has changed. Or maybe it’s my vision, the way I see, but now I see the light. And I can’t un-see it. It’s everywhere.
To our DAREing leader, from one of the now initiated, Thank You! Thank you for showing me how to become a better photographer on my own terms – for opening my eyes to what was always there. That is the true beauty of what you do – you simply give people the space to become the best at what they do without altering style or compromising vision. As I said before, there aren’t words, just Thank You.
