Yeah – it’s snowing!! It’s been so long since I got to play in the snow. Living here in Victoria, we are consistently blessed with mild weather – far drier and warmer than the big cities across the straight; of course, that also means that it rarely gets cold enough to drop below zero. Yesterday I had a date with Nicola and Ben to do their engagement session in Vancouver – they are getting married next “summer” in their homeland of New Zealand, but they wanted some photos to remember the life they have here in the place where they got engaged. As the weather forecast was not exactly favourable, we decided to meet in Gastown and play in an urban landscape. We awoke to snow and by the time we met we had rain, Gastown was dark, and the view to the mountains was non-existent. We were all longing to be in a winter wonderland setting so in a quick, unanimous decision, we jumped into the car and headed for the North Shore. Up at the Cleveland Dam, just below the Grouse Mountain base camp, we found what we were looking for.
The snow was beautiful, falling softly, covering the ground in a thick light blanket of white. Our footprints were silent as we walked the Baden Powell Trail and I fell absolutely in love with these two as we laughed and played until we were too cold to go on. Nicola looked stunning in the soft light of the snow filled forest, and Ben has this smile…it’s more than infectious – it has a way of making you feel happy, truly happy. And when he looks at Nicola, he smiles a lot. They are easy to be with, easy to laugh with, and the combination of their love, my camera, and a snowy soft day was purely magical. Once our fingers and toes were frozen beyond use, we piled back into the car and headed over to the Bake House in Edgemont Village for a chance to warm up over a cup of tea – the perfect end to the perfect morning.
I’m sad I won’t see Nicola and Ben get married, but I am sure the day will be amazing – and filled with all the love and laughter that a wedding day should contain. For now I’m looking forward to part 2 of our engagement adventures – stay tuned for some flower blossom, tandem bicycle goodness coming later this Spring.
To Nicola and Ben – thank you for an awesome morning! I am in love with these images and I hope you are too. To Rich Wallace, my co-partner on this expedition, your help is, as always, invaluable.
