I’ve been staring at the screen now for the length of time it takes me to drink an oversized cup of coffee…and I still can’t think of where to begin. How do I even start to explain this shoot. this couple? I could tell you that they stepped out of the truck with a giant suitcase stuffed with props and a photographer’s fantasy wardrobe, but you’ll get that from the pictures. I could tell you how in love they are, how’s he so there for her (the only bride-groom yet that we’ve met a bridal show along with his fiancé), and that they’re celebrating the early days before their wedding with an engagement session, but if you’re here you’ve probably already deduced that. So where do I begin?
How about I start with the girl, because in my experience that’s where most great stories start. Hilary is, well, gorgeous – that’s obvious…even in the first shot of just her shoes (umm, yeah…electric blue suede stilettos…? I died). She’s stylish and funny, what my dad would call “a real firecracker”. But there’s something else about Hilary, and when you experience it, it eclipses everything: her smile. Or to be more, exact, the smile and the laugh that follows it. It’s cliche, but that smile lights up a room, or, in our case, an entire forest. Hilary is happy – and that kind of genuine happiness is infectious. It reaches out and grabs you and says, “HEY YOU, stop being so serious…life is bloody great so loosen up and LIVE a little!”
Of course, for every love story there’s got to be a boy for the girl. And for Hilary that’s Drew. Drew is electric: pure energy personified. Not hyper, more like a single, sustainable source of joyful power. It’s almost as if he breathes in the essence of his surroundings; it fuels him, gives hime life, animates. I’ve only spent the one afternoon with Drew so far, and I watched as the forest just accepted him, made him somehow more…this must sound strange to the uninitiated, but for those of you that know him, I’m sure you know what I mean. I think that everywhere Drew goes, be it forest, mountain, lake, or urban jungle, he absorbs what is around him and then radiates that energy back out. Now place him together with Hilary’s unbridled and ever present happy and you’re starting to get the picture.
That’s what it’s like with these two: a glorious circle of energy and laughter that fuels more energy and laughter. Words can’t explain it – you just have to be around them and feel it. They shine from the inside out – a glow that I hope I managed to capture. Hilary and Drew, that was…AWESOME! We are absolutely thrilled that you’ve chosen us to be your photographers – if this was what came out of the engagement session, what on earth will the wedding bring?? We can’t wait to find out!
James calls this series, Death By Tutu! I adore this skirt and nearly died when she brought it out of the case!
