designing characters
Creating the look and appeal of a character design comes down to rendering visible that which is invisible. Motivations and conflict naturally take their cue from a character’s hopes, aspirations and proclivities; everything that forms a character’s emotional core thereby gives power to a story. In line, colour, and shape, are coded the essence of narrative art. The ability to build an emotional connection both to the character and the story depends on not only design and composition, but the versatility to conceptualize visually, matching different techniques and styles to different projects.
